STUDENT CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES:
Students assume responsibility for their actions. Each teacher has set rules and standards for student behavior in the classroom. A set of consequences has also been established by each teacher and is explained to the students at the beginning of each school year.
Students must adhere to the following Ranchero rules:
Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful
1. Walk at all times.
2. Stay in designated areas.
3. Use appropriate language and be courteous to others.
4. Put trash in the proper receptacles.
5. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
6. Be punctual to class and prepared to learn.
7. Consume all food, beverages, and candy prior to entering the classrooms, library, office, or gym.
8. Carry I.D. at all times.
Behavior that endangers staff and/or students and that disrupts the orderly classroom or school environment will not be tolerated.
Referrals, tardies, and truancies will be handled by the teachers and administrators. The teacher will explore every reasonable solution to the problem including parent contact. The student may be referred to administration which will result in disciplinary action. Consequences for inappropriate behavior may include: lunch detention in class or ASAP, after school detention, loss of privileges, class suspension, all day ASAP (in-house), home suspension, or behavior contracts.
RMS BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS MATRIX
RMS has designed a matrix that specifically identifies expected behaviors we have for students while they are on campus. These expectations will be enforced by all staff members. Please review the Behavior Expectations Matrix.
Defiance is the refusal to obey lawful authority. The teachers and other members of the staff are required by District policy and state law to provide proper supervision over our students. Any instructions given to a student by a staff member must be followed. A student may contact a counselor or administrator regarding any problems or concerns about an employee’s request. Any student that defies the directive of a staff member may be subject to disciplinary action.
Racial Slurs of any kind will not be tolerated. Disciplinary action against this type of serious misconduct will be taken. Ed Code states:
All pupils have the right to participate fully in the educational process, free from discrimination and harassment.
California’s public schools have an affirmative obligation to combat racism, sexism, and other forms of bias, and a responsibility to provide equal educational opportunity.
Harassment on school grounds directed at an individual on the basis of personal characteristics or status creates a hostile environment and jeopardizes equal educational opportunity as guaranteed by the California Constitution and the United States Constitution.
It is the intent of the Hesperia Unified School District to provide an educational environment for all students which is free of sexual harassment which can cause embarrassment, feelings of powerlessness, loss of self-confidence, reduce ability to perform school work, and increases absenteeism or tardiness. Conduct which is prohibited in the District and which may constitute sexual harassment include: unwelcome sexual flirtations or propositions; verbal abuse of a sexual nature; graphic verbal comments about an individual’s body; sexually degrading words used to describe an individual; display of sexually suggestive behavior; objects or written material in the educational environment; any act of retaliation against an individual who reports a violation of District’s sexual harassment policy or who participates in the investigation of a sexual harassment complaint. Board Policy 5145.8 Physical touching of private body areas is prohibited and subject to disciplinary action.
THREATS OR INTIMIDATION
Students who make threatening statements, whether written or verbal, including by cell phone, internet or text messages, towards other students or staff members, even if there is no intent to follow through with the act, will be taken seriously and will result in disciplinary action taken by the administration.
Incidents of racial slurs, sexual harassment, threats/intimidation, and/or verbal or physical harassment are to be reported immediately to the administration for investigation. Bullying will not be tolerated on campus.
Students who generate, forward or post harassing, intimidating or threatening messages, on or off campus, via texting, voicemails, emails, My Space/Facebook/Internet or any other electronic media, may be subject to disciplinary action.
Plagiarism or dishonesty in school work or on tests will not be tolerated on campus and are subject to disciplinary action.
THEFT AND VANDALISM
Damage to or theft of property belonging to the district, staff or students will result in disciplinary action and restitution may be required. This includes tagging school property.
ASAP (ALTERNATIVE TO SUSPENSION/ADJUSTMENT PROGRAM)
In lieu of home suspension for some offenses, ASAP is a way for students to complete assignments while serving a consequence. Students assigned to ASAP for the day will do work in a classroom with the Principal’s designee. Lunch and breaks will be separate from the rest of the school. Misconduct in ASAP will be cause for home suspension and parent/administration conference.
LUNCH DETENTION/AFTER SCHOOL DETENTION
Lunch detention will be held during both lunches as needed. Students will have the opportunity to buy a lunch in the cafeteria only, with no snack bar purchases. Students are to report to the ASAP room and will be seated separately for lunch. The Principal’s designee will supervise.
After School Detention is from 2:50 PM to 4:00 PM, in the ASAP room, with the Principal’s designee.
